Skills development for regional students

The team at THE END FM are dedicated to providing training and education opportunities to youth in this region, particularly in the creative and media industries. As part of this, the youth run and led community radio station has started offering workshops at local schools, and it has so far been a huge success.

THE END FM started with a six week Podcasting workshop with Finley High School’s Year 9/10 Media class, taught by Radio Pro Maria Foundas. Students were taught about what the medium is, and how to create their very own professional podcast from concept and development, to recording, editing and publishing on the web.

Next was a trip to St Joseph’s College in Echuca to meet with their Year 9 Media class for a lesson in radio and microphone skills. The talented students were keen to give it a go, impressing Maria Foundas who used her extensive background in the industry to teach the students the basics, as well as some tips and tricks. Since then, THE END FM and has returned with an online session on podcasting for the next group of Year 9 Media students taught by long-time radio and podcast professional Jason Wolfgram. THE END FM will return in person when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted to show this same class how to use a variety of professional equipment, and apply practical skills.

Lately THE END FM has been making a weekly trip to Hay to teach a special group of Year 7 students how to record content and create a podcast about Yabbies, an interesting topic they have been learning about at school. It has been an extremely rewarding experience, with all involved keen to see the student’s podcast about Yabbies come together by the end of the workshops.

If you are interested in having THE END FM come and teach your school skills in the media and creative industries, contact a staff member via radio@southwestarts.com.au or 0439 70-6 404 to see what we can do for you. Otherwise, there are multiple training opportunities available for individuals, including ‘Learn Podcasting’, ‘Advanced Interviewing’, ‘Advanced Audio Editing’ and ‘Introduction to DJ Mixing’ all happening before the end of the year.
