(Voice Over) OLIVIA DUFFEY: Welcome to another episode of THE END CHATS, a library of our best interviews to date.

OD: Hi, it’s Olivia from your ‘Afternoon with Olivia’, 2pm to 4pm weekdays at THE END FM. I was able to interview Kieran from the Aussie rock band Spacey Jane on February 22. Just before they head to Deni for Play on The Plains. It was a fantastic interview and Kieran let us know what the band got up to during lockdown, but also some advice for up and coming artists in the region. Let’s listen to that one now.

OD: I am welcoming Kieran from Australian indie rock band Spacey Jane joining us right here at THE END FM with your host, Olivia. Thanks for catching up with us, Kieran.

Kieran Lama: No worries. Thanks for having me.

OD: Can you believe that we’re already two months into 2022?

KL: Yeah. Honestly, it’s been flying by. I think, as things start to ramp up again, and you know then started happening and gigs are on, it’s flying by even quicker than it was when we weren’t doing anything at all. So yeah, it’s pretty wild.

OD: Speaking of 2022, what can we expect from Spacey Jane this year?

KL: I mean, we’re basically just trying to get on the road as much as we can, we’ve got an album coming out in June. And in support of that, and around that, we’ll be playing as many shows, as we’re were able to do, I think we’ve just been raring to go for so long now, you know, ready to get back out there and play in front of people. Again, it’s a pretty exciting proposition.

OD: Has COVID actually had an impact on the band and your music at all?

KL: It’s tough to say I suppose a lot of the themes of the new record, kind of unavoidably going to touch on the kind of sense of isolation, I suppose that gave us all, but for the most part COVID’s impact was so much more about whether we could actually leave our home state and play shows in front of people at all. And that’s always been kind of our bread and butter, what we love to do, and to kind of be stepping back into that world right now is pretty special, I guess.

OD: Now you’re in Melbourne again, and we’re allowed out and about what are you looking most forward to when you get to come to Deni in March?

KL: Honestly, I just don’t think anything but a sense of community that a music festival, can foster. And honestly getting to the site there is absolutely historic and it’s nice to just catch up with ,mates that you haven’t seen for a really long time. Because obviously, you can’t be on the road in a pandemic. Now that that’s back, it’s just great to see a lot of familiar faces. But you know, it’s been a minute.

OD: There are some local artists who are starting up. So I’m just wondering, do you have any advice for local artists starting out here in the region?

KL: Yeah, I mean, I guess just keep going just like grind through it. Because we essentially, we played like, we’ve been a band for six years now. Which is kind of scary to say. But for the first three years, we were playing local gigs, just like non stop and writing as much as we could. And like, all it takes is one moment and I feel like you just got to keep like, put your foot down and go for it. Obviously, we started finding reasons to like because we love doing it and we wanted to do it but we have no idea of the process that it takes to go from, you know, jamming out in the sheds with your mates to actually putting together an album and releasing it and all the things that come in between and that’s been one of the most exciting learning processes for me as a manager and for us as a band. Just like this very special thing that you’ve pour your heart and soul into and develop sort of such a long amount of time in these crazy ways that you don’t, I guess expect it to. It’s always like starting an album release cycle the way we are right now. It’s always my favourite thing like it’s just exciting to be able to share something that you have worked on for so long with a whole bunch of people and to have an audience for that is a massive privilege and something we just don’t take for granted and yeah, I guess it’s nice to look back sometimes and think about how we literally had no idea how to record a song so on and so forth until now here we are like putting on another album and getting ready to try and tour internationally. It’s it’s a strange little like blink and you’ll miss it.

OD: Well, it’s been an absolute dream come true to be interviewing you. So thank you again for joining us here.

KL: Oh, no stress at all. Thanks for having us.

OD: We look forward to seeing you on March 12 at Play on The Plains.

KL: See you out there.
