OD: Hey it’s Liv from your ‘Afternoon With Olivia’, which is on 2 till 4 on most weekdays. Mitch Ansell from Northeast Party House actually joined me on February 23 to tell me what the electronic group is up to, and a bit about their new album. Shelf Life has been a huge hit right here at THE END FM. So Let’s check out that interview now.

OD: Joining me today is Mitch from the one and only Northeast Party House bringing us debatably the best electronic music in the country. I’m your host, Olivia, thanks so much for catching up with us today.
Mitch Ansell: Hey, thanks so much for having me.
OD: So right here at THE END FM, we have been absolutely loving the new album Shelf Life. Can you tell us a bit about what has inspired this?
MA: Yeah, it’s, it’s interesting, I think, because of COVID, that album seems, I think, came out so long ago. The song Shelf Life is about a few of us in Berlin. And it’s a famous club called Berghain. And it’s kind of about a 17 hour party stint there, which is pretty wild.
OD: So will we actually get to hear any of it at Play on The Plains.
MA: Yeah, I think we’ll probably play maybe half of the album, which is really fun. Yeah, it’s always nice to play some new tracks, kind of keeps it interesting for us in a good way. Although we haven’t been able to do much touring since releasing that, that albums kind of had time to sit with, sit with people. So kinda allows us to play some more like album tracks, and not just the singles. So yeah, I think you’re just gonna see six people that are just so happy to be back playing. Yeah, we’re pretty pumped to play at the festival and so nice that things are starting to ease and people can kind of have a boogie a little bit closer to one another. So yeah, it should be fun.
OD: What you guys do is actually, I think an art form and genre that’s not often performed live in regional areas. So you must be pretty excited to be providing this opportunity in Deni.
MA: Yeah, I don’t think any of us have been to Deni. So it’s going to be super fun. We don’t play too many shows out of like the metro areas, and so it’s such a nice experience for us to play these shows.
OD: I was wondering if you had any advice for those maybe wanting to start making their own music similar to this?
MA: Yeah, when the band started, it was, it was very loose. The instrument was the strobe light and a crash cymbal. So I think the beauty of, you know, that initial time of the band, was just people having fun, not taking it too seriously. I don’t know, sometimes things can happen very quickly. For us. We’ve been doing it for 11 years. And it’s kind of been slowly burning away. So you kind of got to enjoy it and not see it as this big, successful money making thing. Otherwise you’ll kind of burn yourself out. In terms of the genre, I guess we’ve always got a lot of us that grew up on on rock music and metal, and then really enjoy electronic music. So it was probably more meeting halfway with the genre styler that it ended up being, but you can kinda come up with your own little unique thing. So yeah, I think it’s just, just have fun. Don’t take it too seriously.
OD: I think that’s great advice. And you know, like you guys have been going on for 11 years. So for you personally, what’s probably been like one of the absolute highlights of being a part of the band and performing?
MA: Bigger shows a great like, like a fall festival that was done in the past or in Melbourne. I remember, just as a kid, going to see, to see bands there, and it was very crazy to end up tacking that onto our our tour, and then playing that show. So that was really great. But also, I don’t know, smaller shows, if I look back some of the best as well. I think there was a there was a gig in Brisbane. Afterwards, it was the loudest, longest kind of clap, and cheer after, it was quite amazing. But um, yeah, that was, that was like probably one of the most special moments and then lots of lots of cool little things that we’ve done along the way.
OD: That’s absolutely amazing. Look, thank you so much again for joining us. It has been an absolute pleasure to have Mitch from Northeast Party House join us and we are certainly keen to see you guys live at Play on The Plains next month.
MA: Yeah, thanks so much for having me. Yeah, we’re super excited, going to be a fun time and it’s such a great lineup. So get down there. It’s gonna be good.
OD: Definitely keen
