OD: Hey It’s Liv from your ‘Afternoon with Olivia’, 2 till 4 on weekdays. I caught up with Jacko from Beddy Rays on February 25, talking about new music coming this year as well as what we can expect from their Play on The Plains performance in March. And they gave me the opportunity to go see them live that night, which was absolutely incredible, so thanks so much for those tickets Jacko. If you don’t believe me check out photos of the concert, we actually have one on the Facebook page, because I am front and centre an END FM t-shirt. Let’s go listen to that interview now.

OD: Joining me now is the Aussie band making cool coastal rock sounds. That’s right. It is Beddy Rays, and today we have Jacko right here at THE END FM. I’m your host Olivia, welcome to the show.

Jackson Van Issum: Thanks, Olivia. Thanks for having me.

OD: Now, look, I believe that you guys have been friends since primary school. When did you discover that you wanted to make music together too?

JVI: Yeah, well, we’ve been mates since we were around six years old as little fdellas growing up together. We sort of bonded over sort of punk, sort of rock music, like the mainstream ones, like Green Day and Offspring and stuff. We sort of bonded our friendship together, and yeah, we always wanted to play music, but we just not like, yeah, we just, we just no one had a drum kit or anything like that, and we’re all playing guitar at one point. And yeah, we ended up getting, after school, Benny, We all bought Benny a drum kit, and like, we went from there. And then yeah, like, Benny was the best at Guitar Hero drums. So we just bloody all went from there, started the band after school.

OD: Oh, I love that. And look, the connection must have made it a lot easier. But being in a band with your mates, and especially during school, does that actually put pressure on the friendships at all?

JVI: Um, sometimes it’s like a bit, a little bit a little bit hard, you know, you know when you like try to pull each other into gear, you know. But at the same time, we just, we realise like, it’s, it’s we wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else. It’s sort of, I dunno, I have seen bands that they have all these fill in members that come in and play and it’s not as strong of a connection. This is like a big journey for all us boys. And I think it resonates on the live show, and when we were talking smack to each other on stage, but yeah.

OD: Considering we’ve all been in lockdown, I imagine it is a relief to be getting out and playing live shows again?

JVI: Oh 100% Yeah, like, even like, you know, Brisbane was finally full capacity again. It was the first time in a couple, couple of years, they said that there was fully packed out. So yeah, it’s really awesome to be able to do it with our mates, and yeah, play big shows again, that’s good, fun.

OD: And with all that kicking off, what can we actually expect from Beddy Rays this year? Is there much planned?

JVI: Yeah, yeah. Well, at the moment, we’re recording an album. And that’s going to be coming out halfway through this year, hopefully, and everything goes to plan. But yeah, we’re working on new music all the time. And yeah, just excited to get out and play this show. I think we’ve got like, nine or something festivals that we’ve been booked into this year and its going from like, you know, last year and the year before COVID, we basically had nothing, to then now it’s like, Alright, we told our bosses like we’re gonna have to have a bit more time of work now. And they’re like, yeah, yeah, we thought it was coming soon, you know? They were all pretty easy going which is alright.

OD: Oh, that’s fantastic. And it’s great to have that support. What are you looking forward to the most at Play on The Plains in particular?

JVI: Oh, I don’t know maybe like just the fact that we got this little crew that’s coming down now with us so. We got our best mate Steph. She’s also our photography and her boyfriend Jarrod, he’s one of our best mates as well, he does all of our merch. Basically just getting, going down with all our friends and having a good time together. That’s what it’s all about I guess. And they get to meet some of the bigger acts and yeah, it’s all happening. bigger crowds and whatnot. So yeah.

OD: We’re definitely very very keen to see you guys. Finally, do you have any advice for young local artists wanting to follow in your footsteps?

JVI: All I can say is just keep if you love what you do, just keep playing guitar or whatever instrument it is, and keep having a crack and play as many gigs as you possibly can. And when you start a band try and make it with, do with your best mates because it makes, makes it a lot funner.

OD: Thank you so much for joining us here at THE END FM it has been amazing to find out more about Beddy Rays before you guys head to the stage on March 12. And we are looking forward to that even more.

JVI: Nah Cheers, Olivia. Appreciate it.
